An Israeli strike has killed Alireza Tangsiri, a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy, in Bandar Abbas, according to an Israeli official, raising concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tangsiri was considered a central figure in Iran’s naval strategy, including potential plans to disrupt or close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. There has been no official confirmation so far from Iranian authorities.

He had a long military career, serving during the Iran-Iraq War and later leading the IRGC Navy’s First Naval District in Bandar Abbas. Known for his hardline rhetoric, he once warned that Iranian forces could pursue adversaries “as far as the Gulf of Mexico.”

In 2018, he was appointed by Ali Khamenei as commander of the IRGC Navy. He later oversaw major naval initiatives, including the unveiling of a converted vessel described as a domestically developed aircraft carrier.

Tangsiri was also under US sanctions. The U.S. Department of the Treasury designated him in 2019 as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, freezing his assets and restricting financial dealings. Additional sanctions followed in 2024 over alleged links to Iran’s drone development programs.

The killing comes at a moment of heightened regional tension and could have immediate implications for global energy markets, particularly if instability spreads across key maritime routes.
