Turkey has deployed a NATO Patriot air defense system in the eastern province of Malatya, home to the strategic Kürecik radar base, as regional tensions escalate following the latest developments in the Middle East, the Turkish Ministry of National Defence said on Tuesday.
The ministry said the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen NATO’s integrated air and missile defence posture and to reinforce the protection of Turkish airspace amid growing security concerns in the region.
Malatya hosts the Kürecik early-warning radar facility, a key component of NATO’s ballistic missile defence architecture designed to detect potential missile threats and provide early tracking data to allied systems.
“In light of recent developments in our region, the necessary measures are being taken to ensure the security of our borders and airspace, while consultations with NATO and our allies continue,” the ministry said in a statement.
The deployment is intended to bolster air defence coverage and support NATO’s enhanced deterrence and protection measures across the alliance’s southeastern flank.
Turkey added that it is closely monitoring the evolving regional situation and maintaining coordination with allied partners.
“Alongside our national measures, NATO has increased its air and missile defence activities. In this context, a Patriot system has been deployed in Malatya to support the defence of our airspace,” the ministry said.
Officials said Ankara will continue assessing developments in cooperation with NATO allies while maintaining its defence and security capabilities at a high level.
