A commercial container ship has been attacked near the coast of Oman, according to British maritime authorities, in an incident that could further escalate tensions in the Gulf region.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the event took place approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman. Initial reports from the vessel’s captain indicated that a small craft approached the ship before gunfire was opened.
Authorities have not independently confirmed the identity of the attackers. However, the initial report suggests the small boat may have been linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Details surrounding this connection remain unverified by independent sources.
Despite what were described as significant structural damages to the vessel, no injuries have been reported among the crew. According to UKMTO, there was also no fire onboard and no environmental pollution detected, a key factor in preventing a wider ecological incident in the area.
Meanwhile, Iranian outlet Nour News, considered close to the country’s Supreme National Security Council, has presented a different version of events. It claims Iranian forces opened fire after the vessel ignored warnings issued by military authorities in the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident comes at a time when the region remains in a fragile security situation. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world’s oil supply passes, has long been a flashpoint between Iran and Western powers.
