Donald Trump has renewed criticism of NATO, accusing allies of doing “absolutely nothing” as Washington pushes a controversial peace proposal amid escalating conflict with Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed Iran had been “militarily decimated” and said the US “needs nothing from NATO,” sharpening divisions within the Western alliance at a critical moment.
The remarks came as Iran and Israel continued exchanging missile and drone strikes, despite Trump’s earlier claims that negotiations with Tehran were underway. Iranian officials have firmly denied any talks.
Abbas Araghchi said on state television that Iran has not entered negotiations and has “no intention” of doing so, contradicting Washington’s messaging.
Meanwhile, China signaled cautious optimism, describing a “glimmer of hope” in the US proposal, even as the situation on the ground remains volatile.
According to sources familiar with the plan, Washington has sent a 15-point ceasefire proposal to Iran via Pakistan. The framework reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, limiting uranium enrichment, curbing Iran’s missile program and cutting support for regional allies.
The conflicting signals highlight a widening gap between diplomatic messaging and battlefield realities, raising doubts over whether any near-term de-escalation is achievable.
