Iran has fired two medium-range ballistic missiles toward the joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia, dramatically escalating tensions in the Indian Ocean region.

The missiles were launched early Friday morning but failed to reach their target, according to initial reports. The base lies roughly 3,800 kilometers from Iranian territory, highlighting the long-range capability of the strike.

Diego Garcia is one of the most strategically important US military installations overseas, serving as a key hub for heavy bombers and long-range operations across the Middle East and Asia.

Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency confirmed the launch, describing it as a “significant step” in targeting US and allied interests beyond West Asia. However, no details were provided on whether the base sustained any damage.

There has been no immediate official response from the White House, the Pentagon, or British authorities.

The island of Diego Garcia, part of the Chagos Archipelago under UK control, has played a central role in US military operations for decades, including missions in Iraq and across Asia.

The incident comes amid already heightened geopolitical tensions and raises concerns over potential retaliation from the United States and its allies.
