US President Donald Trump criticised French President Emmanuel Macron and raised doubts about NATO support during remarks at the White House, as the conflict with Iran continues.
Trump said the war could last “two to three more weeks” and suggested the US had sought help from allies but did not depend on them.
Referring to NATO allies, Trump said, “We didn’t need them, but I asked anyway.”
He then turned to France, adding,
“I took France, Macron — his wife treats him badly, he still remembers the slap she gave him,”
a remark that prompted laughter from those present. The reference appeared to relate to a widely circulated video from 2025 involving Brigitte Macron, although the context of that footage remains unclear.
Trump also claimed Macron declined immediate support in the Persian Gulf, saying assistance could come only after the war, though these claims have not been independently verified.
His comments highlight growing tensions between the US and some European allies over how to respond to the Iran conflict.
