OpenAI is developing a unified desktop “super app” that aims to combine ChatGPT, coding assistant Codex and an AI-powered browser into a single platform, as competition in the AI space intensifies.

The move is designed to simplify OpenAI’s growing ecosystem of tools and reduce internal inefficiencies caused by managing multiple separate products. Instead of switching between apps, users would be able to chat, write code and browse the web through one interface.

The reported platform would bring together ChatGPT for conversation, Codex for programming assistance and Atlas, an AI browser concept, into a single workflow. The goal is to position OpenAI not just as a tool provider, but as a central operating layer for everyday digital tasks.

The development comes as competition sharpens, particularly from Anthropic’s Claude, which has gained traction among developers for its strong coding capabilities and productivity features.

A unified app could reshape how users interact with AI, turning it into a constant, central workspace rather than a set of separate utilities. It would also signal a shift toward AI-driven operating environments, where tasks are handled seamlessly within one system.

If successful, OpenAI’s approach could redefine productivity software, placing AI at the core of how people work, build and navigate online.
