The Los Angeles Lakers made an assured start to the NBA playoffs, defeating the Houston Rockets 107-98 in Game 1, despite missing several key players and facing pre-game uncertainty over their lineup.

According to game reports, the Lakers were without Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves and Maxi Kleber, yet still managed to control large stretches of the contest. Much of that stability came through LeBron James, who delivered a composed all-around performance with 19 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds.

The result, however, was shaped not only by experience but also by unexpected contributions. Luke Kennard emerged as a decisive figure, recording 27 points — reportedly a career-high in the playoffs — and providing the offensive spark that allowed Los Angeles to pull away in key moments.

Houston’s task became more complicated shortly before tip-off. Kevin Durant, widely considered their primary scoring option, was ruled out with a knee issue. Details around the injury remain limited, though reports suggest it is not long-term, with a possible return in Game 2.

The absence of Durant appeared to impact Houston’s offensive rhythm. While the Rockets managed to compete physically — particularly on the boards — their shooting efficiency lagged behind. They struggled to convert second-chance opportunities into sustained scoring runs, allowing the Lakers to maintain control.

Speaking after the game, Lakers coach JJ Redick pointed to mentality rather than personnel as the key factor behind the win. He said the team’s focus remained on execution and consistency, regardless of who was available, adding that his players “met the moment” in a high-pressure environment.

The broader context of the performance underlines a familiar theme. At 41, LeBron James continues to operate as the central figure in Los Angeles’ system. His ability to dictate tempo and involve teammates remains critical, particularly when the roster is stretched by injuries.

Elsewhere on the opening day of the playoffs, several contenders made strong starts to their respective series.

The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 126-113 win over the Toronto Raptors, with reports highlighting an efficient offensive display and a high-tempo approach that Toronto struggled to contain. The victory gives Cleveland an early 1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series.

The Denver Nuggets also opened with a win, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-105. Denver reportedly used a decisive third-quarter run to take control, with Nikola Jokić delivering another influential performance. His contribution, alongside Jamal Murray’s scoring, reinforced Denver’s status as a serious title contender.

The New York Knicks completed a clean sweep for home teams on the first day, beating the Atlanta Hawks 113-102. The Knicks maintained composure throughout, with Jalen Brunson leading the scoring effort and helping secure a steady opening result.

Meanwhile, the final playoff spots were confirmed through the play-in tournament. The Phoenix Suns advanced after defeating the Golden State Warriors, while the Orlando Magic secured their place with a dominant win over the Charlotte Hornets.

These results completed the 16-team playoff bracket, setting the stage for what is expected to be a tightly contested first round.

A notable early trend is that all home teams won their opening games. While this does not determine the outcome of any series, it reflects the importance of home-court advantage and early momentum in playoff basketball.

Looking ahead, attention now shifts to Game 2 across the matchups. For Houston, much may depend on Durant’s availability and whether the team can improve its offensive efficiency. For the Lakers, the challenge will be maintaining consistency without over-reliance on James.

Across the board, teams will be looking to adjust quickly. The opening games have provided initial signals, but as is often the case in the NBA playoffs, the real direction of each series is likely to emerge over the next few contests.

For now, the Lakers, Cavaliers, Nuggets and Knicks have taken the first step — but the margins remain tight, and the postseason has only just begun.
