At least five people have been killed in a reported shooting at a supermarket in Kyiv, according to local authorities and initial media reports, in an incident that has shaken the Ukrainian capital. Several others were injured, including a child, as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The attack reportedly began outside the store, where an armed individual opened fire before entering the supermarket. Witness accounts suggest the situation quickly escalated inside, with the suspect allegedly taking multiple civilians hostage while continuing to shoot.

Officials have not yet released a full timeline of events, and some details remain unclear or unverified. Early reports indicate that at least two victims were found dead in a nearby neighbourhood, while several injured individuals were transported to hospitals across Kyiv for treatment.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement that at least 10 people were receiving medical care following the incident. “All are receiving the necessary treatment. Four hostages were rescued. Investigations are ongoing,” he said, adding that both the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are involved in the inquiry.

Emergency responders and heavily armed police units quickly surrounded the area, launching what officials described as a large-scale operation to contain the situation. The suspect was ultimately shot dead by police after reportedly refusing to surrender, though authorities have yet to provide further details about the confrontation.

Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as the shooting unfolded. Some said people were prevented from leaving the premises during the most critical moments, as law enforcement worked to secure the building and prevent further casualties.

Among the injured are several adults and at least one child, who was reportedly taken to hospital in critical condition. A security guard working at the supermarket is also believed to have been wounded during the incident.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the attacker or provided information on a possible motive. It remains unclear whether the incident was linked to any broader security concerns or if it was an isolated act.

The shooting comes at a time of heightened alert across Ukraine following another recent incident in the city of Odessa, where a gunman opened fire on passersby. No fatalities were reported in that case, but the event raised concerns about public safety in urban areas.

Security analysts note that while Ukraine continues to deal with the pressures of ongoing conflict, incidents of this nature add an additional layer of strain on emergency services and law enforcement. Officials are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.

For now, the focus remains on the victims and those injured, as well as efforts to establish a clear account of what happened. Authorities have urged the public to rely on official information and avoid spreading unverified claims as the situation continues to develop.
