A powerful explosion has struck the Ponte Galeria area in Rome, causing the collapse of a residential building and damaging nearby homes, raising fears that people may still be trapped under the rubble.
The blast occurred on Via Tavagnasco, where initial reports suggest a gas cylinder explosion brought down an apartment block, while at least three nearby residences were also affected by the force of the blast.
Walls were completely destroyed, and debris damaged several parked vehicles in the area. Firefighters responded immediately and managed to pull two injured people from the rubble before emergency medical teams arrived.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, as authorities fear others may still be trapped beneath the debris. The situation remains fluid as crews continue to clear the site.
Around 70 residents have been evacuated from nearby buildings and remain outside their homes for safety reasons, as officials assess structural risks and secure the area.
