The animated film Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to make a major impact at the box office, with early projections pointing to a potential record-breaking debut. Industry estimates suggest the film could generate between $175 million and $180 million over its first five days in North America.

According to analysts and tracking services, total earnings could rise further, potentially reaching between $190 million and $200 million if demand continues to build over the extended opening period. These figures remain projections and have not yet been confirmed by official box office results.

The film has been released across approximately 4,000 theaters in the United States, with Universal Pictures aiming to capitalize on a long weekend and strong family audience turnout. Internationally, the film is also expected to perform strongly, with forecasts suggesting at least $175 million in overseas markets, potentially pushing its global opening total to between $350 million and $375 million.

If these estimates are met, the film would rank among the biggest releases of 2026 so far, surpassing recent titles such as Project Hail Mary, which earned around $80.5 million in the US and $140 million globally during its opening three-day weekend.

To match the success of its predecessor, however, the new installment would need to reach the upper end of projections. The 2023 hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened with $204 million over five days in North America and eventually went on to gross approximately $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming one of the most successful films of the year.

The new film, reportedly produced on a budget of around $110 million excluding marketing costs, is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. It expands the story into a space-setting adventure, following Mario and Luigi as they journey through the galaxy alongside familiar characters such as Yoshi, Princess Peach and Toad, while facing Bowser and his son.

The voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser. Additional cast members include Keegan-Michael Key, Donald Glover and Benny Safdie.

At the same time, another release is entering theaters, with the romantic drama Drama debuting alongside the animated blockbuster. Produced by A24, the film stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson and is projected to earn between $12 million and $15 million across roughly 3,000 theaters.

Directed by Kristoffer Borgli, the film follows an engaged couple whose relationship is challenged by an unexpected revelation, placing their future in question. With a reported budget of around $28 million, it is expected to attract a different audience segment compared to the family-oriented Mario release.

Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary continues its run, having already generated approximately $164 million in the United States and $300 million globally. The film has become the highest-grossing title for Amazon MGM Studios, surpassing previous releases such as Creed III.

With strong projections and broad audience appeal, “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is positioned to take the top spot at the box office, though final results will depend on audience turnout and international performance over the coming days.
